Getting Ready for your Session Questions, Answered

  • 1.  Look as you do on your best day

    2.  Select your shirt or jacket – consider a  solid color, well fit shirt, perhaps with a bit of texture

    3.  Your shirt or jacket should complement the color of your eyes or hair

    4.  Be well rested

    5.  Do you hair as if you were going to an interview.  Ultimately aim to look natural – not like you tried too hard…

    6.  Plan forward:  What are you trying to portray, your brand, or your type.  Ultimately, we want your picture to reflect … YOU!

    7.  Keep clothing and jewelry simple and pulled together.

    8.  Aim for good contrast.

    9.  Have Fun!

  • Book in the spring of your junior year. This lets you avoid the summer heat and gives you plenty of time before yearbook submission deadlines. June is a perfect month!

  • Check directly with your school websites as requirements vary. Common rules include no hats, no logos, portrait-style shots, and specific guidelines for lifestyle photos. Confirm the submission deadline too.

  • More than you think. Many people look back at their senior photo 30+ years later, and it's often used for college applications too — so it's worth putting in the effort.

  • If you need one, get it 5–7 days before your shoot — long enough for your hair to settle and look natural, not freshly buzzed. If you are a HS student and not sure if you need one? Then parent or trusted adult who is 10+ years older than you for an honest opinion.

  • Wash and fully dry your hair the night before or the morning of your shoot. It should be clean and completely dry before you arrive.

  • Solid color shirts are a classic go-to. Bring a change of clothes if you have a couple of favorites — options are always helpful. Choose something comfortable that makes you feel confident!

  • What brand are you aiming to portray? Professional, Casual, cozy, dressy, preppy, or edgy all work well. Make sure straps and layers complement each other. Avoid plunging necklines. Be thoughtful about strapless, tops, when the image is cropped it can create the illusion that you aren’t wearing any clothes at all….

  • Again it depends upon the brand you aim to portray? Professional headshots should be geared to your industry. Lifestyle or Casual? T-shirts, polos, button-downs, or sweaters all photograph well. Jeans with a light or dark shirt, or khakis with a colored shirt are both strong choices. Make sure facial hair is clean and tidy.

  • Skip plunging necklines and t-shirts with oversized logos on the front — they pull focus away from you.

Baggy clothing can add bulk to your frame.

  • Yes — lifestyle shots are popular and totally up to you. Bring any props, equipment, or themed clothing you'd like and you can decide on the day what to include

  • Choose solid colors that complement your hair, eyes, and skin tone — the goal is to keep the focus on you.

    • Feminine: Red, royal blue, yellow, emerald green, bright purples, pink, orange

    • Masculine: Black, white, charcoal, royal blue, navy, burgundy, red, forest green, mustard, tan, pink, purple. Plaid and stripes also look great.

  • Avoid light pastels and neon colors. White can be tricky — it may wash out your skin tone, so test it first if you're considering it.

  • Yes — mixing textures (smooth with knit, silk, sparkles, denim, or leather) adds visual depth. Layers like a plaid shirt under a vest, or a scarf, add dimension to your photos.

  • Bring anything you might want and decide on the day. Good options include:

    • Necklaces, bracelets, scarves, hats, hair pieces

    • Boots, heels, ties

    • Musical instruments, sports gear, or hobby equipment

  • It's worth thinking about — many poses include hands near the face. Trim your nails and avoid chipped polish or bold patterns. Natural colors, or no polish photograph best.

  • Match your shoes to your outfit and location:

    • Beach or waterfront: Flip flops, sandals, or deck shoes

    • Town or industrial setting: Boots with jeans

    • City: dress shoes

    • General tip: Boots or heeled shoes create long, flattering lines in photos
